New Teacher Loan Forgiveness Options for California Educators
Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE) Grant
The APLE grant is a California teacher loan forgiveness program administered by the California Student Aid Commission. Teachers with federal student loans have four loan forgiveness program options:
Public Service Loan Forgiveness
This program forgives the remaining balance of your federal student loans after you make 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for a public service employer, such as a school or government agency. Under recent changes announced by the Biden administration, you may be eligible for forgiveness even if you have not yet made 120 payments. This temporary waiver will expire on October 31, 2022.
Teacher Loan Forgiveness
This program forgives up to $17,500 of your federal student loans if you teach full-time for five consecutive years at a low-income school or educational service agency.
Perkins Loan Cancellation for Teachers and State Employees
This program cancels the remaining balance of your Perkins Loans after you teach full-time for five consecutive years at a low-income school or educational service agency.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and Temporary Waiver
The PSLF program forgives the remaining balance of your federal student loans after you make 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for a public service employer. Under the recent changes announced by the Biden administration, you may be eligible for forgiveness even if you have not yet made 120 payments. This temporary waiver will expire on October 31, 2022.
Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program
Teachers who serve at least five years at a low-income school or educational service agency can apply for the federal Teacher Loan Forgiveness. Under the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program if you teach full time for five complete and consecutive academic years in a low-income school or educational service agency and meet other eligibility criteria, you may qualify for forgiveness of up to $17,500 on your federal student loans.
