Smart was a Civil War veteran who had raised six children on his own after his wife died in childbirth. The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged states to observe Father's Day, and in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation making Father's Day a national holiday.
