New Programme to Focus on Nation-Building and Leadership

PLKN to Resume in 2024 for Those Born in 2007

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's National Service Training Programme (PLKN) will be revived with a focus on nation-building and leadership development.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein announced that the programme will resume in 2024 for those born in 2007.

Hishammuddin said the new PLKN will be more comprehensive and inclusive, with a focus on instilling values of patriotism, unity, and resilience among Malaysian youths.

"The PLKN will be a transformational experience for our young people," Hishammuddin said. "It will help them develop their leadership skills, teamwork, and discipline, while also instilling in them a strong sense of national identity."

The PLKN was first introduced in 2004 as a compulsory programme for all Malaysian citizens aged 18 to 21. The programme was suspended in 2018 due to concerns over its effectiveness and cost.

The revived PLKN will be voluntary and will offer a range of activities, including physical training, community service, and leadership development workshops.

Hishammuddin said the government is confident that the new PLKN will be a success and will play a vital role in developing future leaders for Malaysia.
