Torres Strait Islanders: The Indigenous Melanesians of Australia
About the Torres Strait Islands
The Torres Strait Islands, located between Australia and Papua New Guinea, are an archipelago of at least 274 small islands in the Torres Strait. These islands are part of the state of Queensland.
Torres Strait Islander Peoples
The Torres Strait Islanders are the Indigenous Melanesian people of the Torres Strait Islands. They are one of Australia's two distinct Indigenous cultural groups, the other being the Aboriginal peoples.
Contact with Europeans, who established a settlement at Somerset near the tip of Cape York in 1863, had a significant impact on the Torres Strait Islanders.
